Squirrel Proof Bird Feeder Review

Putting out some seeds on an old plate with the intention to feed the beautiful birds that come to your backyard all winter long might end up to feeding some other visitors instead. In many areas of the world squirrels thrive on the food that bird lovers put outside. If you want to stop feeding these rodents and have the seeds go to the beautiful birds you wanted to feed in the first place then you should consider a bird feeder that protects the seeds from the squirrels.

Electrical shocks can keep those squirrels away from the food that you intend to be for the birds. Keep in mind that birds usually fly around and come from above when they get to a bird feeder. Squirrels do not fly but run around on the ground and need to climb upwards to get to the bird food. Change the battery regularly and the squirrels will never get to the bird food.

Some bird feeders are designed to collapse when an animal heavier than your favorite bird gets on it. The seed will thus be protected from the unwanted intruder. Squirrels tend to be heavier than the little birds you are trying to feed.

When you purchase a bird feeder with baffles you need to realize that you have to place it far enough away from anything a squirrel can climb on. This system often works, but you need to realize that some of these squirrels are rather smart and these creatures will try to find ways to make the bird seeds fall down. A cold winter with little food for squirrels makes these animals quite inventive and they tend to come up with the craziest stunts to beat the odds.

This places the mesh bird feeder in the same category as those with baffles. Many squirrels have been seen hanging on those mesh bird feeders going back and forth like a tomboy on a swing. The swinging movement makes the bird seeds fall through the openings. Birds looking for food will skip your yard when they notice the moving mesh bird feeder.

Tube feeders offer another solution to the problem. Smaller birds are able to get in from the top and get to the food, while bigger birds and other animals cannot get through the access area. Often these access areas can be adjusted depending on the size of the birds you are trying to attract.

Some tube feeders come with a wired area around it. When squirrels climb these wires the area will be pulled downwards and the access areas will be closed. Keep in mind however to regularly check your tube feeder if you choose to go with this model, because you will have to manually readjust the wired area and open up the access area so that the birds you love can get to it.
